Design

Designing a logo is much more than just creating a pretty image. It’s about crafting a visual identity that resonates with an audience and embodies a brand’s values. At NickelBronx, a branding project begins with a client’s brief and transforms into a carefully curated brand identity. Here's a step-by-step look at our comprehensive logo design process.

Step 01:  Receiving and Interpreting the Brief

The process kicks off with receiving a detailed logo brief from our client. This brief serves as our roadmap, outlining the client's vision, values, and objectives. We take the time to thoroughly interpret their needs and identify their target audience. Understanding the audience is crucial for a project. We always want to ensure a logo resonates with the masses and garners interest in the product or service.

This step is also for establishing any competitors and looking at what they may or may not be doing well. Researching similar brands helps us identify any overused trends in a particular industry. Knowing what symbols to avoid makes our clients stand out from the competition. Key words to describe the brand are also super helpful to establish as they help dictate the overall feel of the logo. By thoroughly capturing the client's vision in a brief, we set a solid foundation for a logo design that is both unique and impactful.

Step 02:  Internal Strategizing and Design Meeting

Once we've digested the brief, our design team begins to strategize. We brainstorm potential iconography, symbols, and elements that could align with the new brand. Collaborative meetings are held to discuss and bounce ideas off each other. To further solidify our design direction, we often create mood boards or mind maps, ensuring we are all on the same page before we begin designing. This step is crucial in establishing diverse ideas to strengthen our concepts. By creating a collaborative environment, we lay the groundwork for innovative designs that will help craft a new visual identity.

Step 03:  Sketching and Digital Roughs

With a clearer direction in mind, our designers move on to the sketching phase. This is where ideas start taking shape, as we translate our brainstorming into digital roughs. This phase is all about experimentation and exploration, testing out different concepts to see what works and what doesn't. We explore various styles, fonts, and compositions, ensuring we cover a broad range of possibilities. This is an iterative process and allows us to push our creative boundaries. Each sketch is evaluated and refined, gradually honing in on the strongest concepts.

Step 04:  Internal Review and Selection

Once we have a selection of concepts from each designer, we convene for our first internal review meeting. At this stage, we present our initial ideas in black and white, deliberately excluding color to ensure the design is judged on its merits alone. The focus here is on creating a strong brand mark that we would be excited to present to the client. This is also the time to review the designs with the full team and evaluate what is working.

During this step, we often develop new ideas and refine existing ones, leading to clearer and more focused concepts. Feedback and collaborative critique help us identify the most promising directions and make necessary adjustments. This thorough review process ensures that the concepts we want to present to the client are well-considered and align with their vision.

Step 05:  Presentation Deck and Branding Elements

After incorporating any revisions from our internal review, we build out a comprehensive presentation deck. This deck showcases the selected logo concepts in various applications, including typography, patterns, mockups, color palette, and icons. By presenting these elements together, we allow the client to visualize how the brand elements will tie together and be applied across different mediums.

We also like to include at least one context-specific mockup, demonstrating the logo's adaptability in real-world scenarios such as a business card, website, or sign. These help the client see the brand in action and understand its potential impact. The goal of our presentations is to show how a brand will come to life, giving confidence in the final design.

Step 06:  Client Presentation and Feedback

With our selected concepts, we move on to the first client meeting. During this presentation, we showcase our designs, explain the thought process behind each concept, and highlight how they align with the client’s goals. We listen carefully to the client's feedback, noting their preferences and any concerns they may have. This step is crucial for refining and improving the logos based on our client's input. By engaging in an open dialogue, we ensure that the final brand identity not only meets but exceeds expectations.

Step 07:  Client Revisions and Finalization

We are open to up to three rounds of revisions, meticulously incorporating the client's feedback to fine-tune the designs. Each round of revisions brings us closer to a logo that perfectly aligns with our client’s vision. We aim to reach a final product that everyone is satisfied with, whether it takes one round or three. Throughout this process, we maintain clear and open communication with our clients, ensuring that their input is thoughtfully considered at each stage. This approach guarantees that the final logo is not only visually appealing but also a true representation of their brand.

Step 8:  Brand Guidelines and Asset Delivery

After the final logo is selected, we create a comprehensive set of brand guidelines for the client. This document serves as a reference, outlining best practices for using their new logo, including correct logo usage, scaling, spacing, typography, and color palette. Additionally, we provide a link to a drive where the client can download all the necessary brand assets, such as logo files, icons, patterns, and any collateral pieces.

Designing a logo is a collaborative and iterative process that demands creativity, strategic thinking, and attention to detail. From interpreting the initial brief to delivering a comprehensive brand identity, our mission is to create a logo that not only looks amazing but also reflects the client's brand and aligns with their audience.

Whether we nail the perfect logo on our first attempt or refine a design through multiple rounds of revisions, our ultimate goal is client satisfaction and the creation of a timeless mark that embodies the essence of their brand. By providing clear guidelines and delivering all necessary assets, we ensure our clients can confidently implement and maintain their new visual identity, setting them up for continued success in their market.
